"MAPS can now be downloaded from the web in seconds to help you get from A to B.

"But the simple directions from the internet and satellite navigation systems are wiping our historic landmarks and monuments from our national consciousness.

"For although the Google map shows a network of roads snaking across the Wiltshire countryside, it totally ignores one detail by the roadside - the World Heritage site of Stonehenge.

"And it is just that kind of omission which has led traditional map-makers to fear that a generation of youngsters will grow up not knowing their Arsenal from their Elgin."
