The Build PAC Boys: Post-election City Council contribution reports

Here is an overview of the post-general election Form C-1 ethics reports filed with the Tulsa City Clerk's office by 5 p.m. Monday, the deadline for the post-general filing for the April 1 Tulsa City Council general election.

Perhaps the most interesting report wasn't from a candidate. It was from Build PAC, the developer lobby's political action committee. Build PAC filled out an incomplete report which did not list the names of contributors or amounts of contributions. It did list the candidates which received its largess:

Emanuel Lewis (District 1 Democrat) - $500
David Patrick (District 3 Independent) - $1,500
Eric Gomez (District 4 Republican) - $1,500
Dennis Troyer (District 6 Democrat) - $750
Bill Christiansen (District 8 Republican) - $1,000
G. T. Bynum (District 9 Republican) - $1,000

It was a good year for Build PAC. They elected five of the six candidates they supported, and they timed their donations to avoid being an issue in the campaign. Note also that most of these candidates also received contributions from the ABC PAC (Associated Builders & Contractors) and the Realtors PAC.

Now that we know who the Build PAC Boys are, we'll be watching to see if they toe the development lobby's line or if they demonstrate some independence between now and the next election. This city's future is too important to let it be decided by those who are only out for short-term profits.

Please note that the numbers for Eric Gomez do not include any of the contributions from his May 5th breakfast fundraiser at the Chalkboard Restaurant. Even without those donations, he was able to raise more than he spent.

Ah, the Metro-area Development Lobby can breathe a blissful sigh of relief as they return to the halcyon days before the pesky Gang of Five arrived on the scene.

A Rubber Stamp City Council is so much more EFFICIENT that those noisy, brutish Gang of 4.5 City Councilors Medlock, Mautino, Henderson, Turner and sometimes Sam "The Sham" Roop.

Looks like Henderson is the last man standing of the former Gang of Five, although it appears that occasionally Councilor Eagleton will stand with him, as they did together on the Anti-Kaiser River Tax campaign.

For a few thousand dollar investment in a city councilor, these developers with the help of their land attorney friends on the TMUA Cameron and Reynolds help send subsidized cheap, clean water to their housing developments in fast-growing Owasso and Bixby, helping turn $4K per acre prairie land into $100K per acre subdivisions, garnering a remarkable return on their investment.

And, it helpful to have a few Pro-Development friends on the TMAPC and the BOA to allow ANYTHING-GOES in-fill development in Tulsa's wonderful older neighborhoods. Well, wonderful until St. John's Hospital or Quick-Rip lands in your front-yard or back-yard.

Or, you are allowed to build a new Mega-mansion built on two lots formerly hosting two small neighborhood-sized houses.

It's happening all over Tulsa.

Such a WISE investment!

Dennis Troyer has no local support other than the PAC's (of which I include the mayor's hubby). District 6 has become a fill in your candidate and move along to the cash register, please office.

District 5's Martinson received $1,100 from the Jeff Stave for Council campaign. I understood one campaign could not contribute to another. Isn't that what they tried to get the State AG on?

And, finally, I couldn't help but wonder how things might be different if a candidate could receive contributions only from those who could actually vote for them.

It seems unrepresentative for a District, such as six, to be selected by those other than people of the district.

Sure, he got the most votes. But, he was practically the only voice they got to hear and the only signs seen on the byways. And, that's due to him having the funding to do so.

I'd support a change in local campaign finance which allowed contributions only from those who could vote for the candidate to which they contribute.

It is, after all, THEIR representation.

My god the slime on these donations. It sickens me how most of these guys are bought and paid for by the development lobby. It makes me think that the Planitulsa thing is just all for show.
